The challenge
SCoR represents around 30,000 radiographers across the UK. Its old website was hard to update, and new member sign-ups were going down. The new site also had to serve two groups: the Society and the College.
My approach
I was the only designer, working on both the public website and the member portal. While looking for inspiration, I studied an MRI machine and noticed the circles within its structure. That became the idea for the whole site, and it's what won the client over.
I used circles throughout, in image crops, icons, backgrounds and animations.
The site was built on Kentico, which has a page builder. So instead of fixed pages, I designed components that could fit into any area, keep the circle idea, and still work with the client's own content.
I created a design system for the client and handed the designs over to the developers.
I also built the front end myself. This meant I could test every component in the real site, and make sure each one looked right and worked well wherever the client placed it.
The results
New membership registrations rose by 615%, website visitors by 31%, and the project won 2 Kentico Site of the Year Awards, one for the website and one for the member portal.
Why I chose this project
I'm proud that a small detail from an MRI machine became the idea that shaped the whole site, and won the client over. It's also a project I saw through from the very first idea to the front-end build.
